introduction
For my design degree capstone project, I created a social cataloging platform for SNL sketches called Catalog 8H. Catalog 8H (named after the studio they film SNL in) lets you track sketches you’ve watched, rate them, leave comments, view the cast, and see what your friends and the SNL community think.
rationale
I love SNL. Not because it’s hilarious every week, but because it has become a fun ritual. My girlfriend and I sit down and watch every Saturday, commenting on whether the sketches are funny or not. It also influences our humor. In fact, we dressed up as the diner lobster sketch for Halloween last year. Whether it is good or bad, SNL is something we care about, and I wanted to create an experience that would help people connect over the show
(But let’s not talk about how this idea actually came from an off-the-cuff tweet from a random person saying there should be a Letterboxd equivalent for SNL)
takeaways
From doing this project, I learned:
- 1. How to work with the Apple Human Interface Guidelines, making sure my prototype was polished and familiar to use for my users.
- 2. How to design a brand experience, especially one that is focused on an existing entity without copying their established brand identity.
- 3. How to create icons, based on SNL sketches, which I used to flesh out my brand identity and add texture to my interface.
